Le mannequin Naomi Campbell a critiqué les organisateurs des Grammy Awards après la défaite du jeune chanteur nigérian Burna Boy, donné favori pour une récompense.

Le chanteur Afrobeats avait été nominé pour son album African Giant, mais c'est la musicienne et compositrice béninoise, Angélique Kidjo, qui a remporté le Grammy Award 2020 du meilleur album de musique du monde pour son album Celia.

Dans un long post publié sur Instagram, Naomi Campbell a félicité Angélique Kidjo pour sa victoire et pour "avoir répandu la lumière et ouvert les esprits à travers la musique".

Mais elle a ensuite critiqué la Recording Academy, l'organisation derrière les Grammy Awards, pour avoir intégré le style Afrobeats, un genre de musique populaire qui contient des éléments musicaux ouest-africains, dans la catégorie World Music.

"Cette fausse représentation diminue un genre entier dans lequel un tel niveau élevé de talent a émergé; un genre qui a été une force d'espoir et de positivité pour beaucoup, et un véhicule pour l'art sur le continent africain", a-t-elle écrit.

Campbell a appelé à l'introduction d'une nouvelle catégorie.

"Soyez dans la tendance du moment pour ce qui concerne la musique populaire actuelle en incluant l'Artiste Afrobeats de l'année, la Chanson de l'année, l'Album de l'année et toutes les sous-catégories que ce genre mérite."
